DAME WINE CLUB PICK

SEPTEMBER 2023

Our second wine from the Loire hails from the dynamic (and biodynamic!) duo François and Pascaline Plouzeau at Domaine de la Garreliere in Touraine. This carbonic maceration* bottling of gamay is a light, bright crushable red with complexity and structure. It shines with notes of red cherry, black cherry, cranberry, rose petals, and has a long finish with soft tannins.

François and Pascaline work with local artists for all of their wine labels, and the joyful Sans Tra-La La expresses the spirit of the wine—vibrant and ebullient—it happily dances on your palate.

We featured a previous vintage of this wine in club several years ago, and yes—it’s so nice we’re offering it twice (sorry!). But we are not sorry for loving this wine and for sharing it every chance we get. It is always fun to see beloved wines change from vintage to vintage.

* Carbonic maceration is a winemaking process that uses whole clusters of grapes in a sealed, carbon dioxide-filled tank to start fermentation within each grape. This technique produces fresh, fruit-forward, low-tannin red wines.

Domaine de la Garrelière Touraine Gamay Sans Tra La La 2022

Gamay

Loire Valley, France

“This long-running Garreliere favourite is made from 100% Gamay and is fermented naturally without the ‘help’ of commercial yeasts. The vines from which the grapes are sourced are around 40 years old and in their prime.

The vines grow in Aeolian sand and clay derived from flint which, in turn, is sitting on a layer of limestone.

After harvesting in small crates, the grapes undergo carbonic maceration for a period of twelve days in 2020. The juice was then pressed and left on skins for one to two weeks and then is racked off to large concrete tanks.

It is fresh, lively, full of flavour and, above all, delicious. Good for drinking anytime, anywhere.

The joyous label captures the essence of this wine. The French would call this a ‘gouleyant’ wine, meaning that it is gluggable or smashable.” -Living Wines
